چکیده

Applications which require a combination of structured data with unstructured text elds are becoming of increasing practical interest. But whereas structured data are usually stored in a relational database, large text collections are maintained by proprietary text or information retrieval systems. The synthesis of both areas is still a topic of intensive research. We describe one such application, namely maintaining library catalogues, and study the eeciency of two implementation alternatives both based on RDBMS technology. In the rst alternative word occurrence information is encoded using bitlists. The other chooses a direct implementation within the relational model. Performance tests are done which are based on real world data and real world user transactions. They demonstrate that the problem of the bitlist implementation is caused by conversions which are necessary to combine them with struc-tured data. In contrast, our direct implementation beneets from today's sophisticated RDBMS technology and performs promisingly well.

Semiometrics: Applying Ontologies across Large-Scale Digital Libraries

As large-scale digital libraries become more available and complete, not to mention more numerous, it is clear there is a need for services that can draw together and perform inference calculations on the metadata produced. However, the traditional Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) model, while efficiently constructed and optimised for many business structures, does not necessarily ...

A PAPI Implementation for BlueGene

The IBM BlueGene/L (BG/L) super-computer holds 3 of the top 10 rankings on the 26th TOP500 list of LINPACK performance. The system is novel in its design in many aspects when compared to other more traditional high-performance computing systems. When developing system libraries as well as when tuning application code for BG/L it is essential to be able to measure the impact of code modification...

Decision Tables: Scalable Classification Exploring RDBMS Capabilities

In this paper, we report our success in building efficient scalable classifiers in the form of decision tables by exploring capabilities of modern relational database management systems. In addition to high classification accuracy, the unique features of the approach include its high training speed, linear scalability, and simplicity in implementation. More importantly, the major computation re...

A Scheme for Evaluating XML Engine on RDBMS

There are an increasing number of DBMS vendors thinking of integrating XML data management into traditional relational database, with wider use of XML. In this case, a comprehensive evaluation methodology is needed to evaluate the XML engine in RDBMS correctly. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of XML engine and propose an evaluation strategy of XML engine in a RDBMS. We believe tha...
